First Week Complete!
Our first week of kindergarten is
complete! Students have dived
right in by learning classroom procedures and routines.
We have also practiced the school-wide PBIS system so
that we are safe, respectful, and responsible in all we do.
Reader’s Workshop and Writer’s Workshop have
begun! Students are practicing
habits of independent readers, writers, and listeners. Each classroom
has practiced what each workshop should look and sound like.
In Reader’s Workshop, students have helped to create a
list of what good readers do. Students have
been introduced to print concepts as we demonstrate how to open and take care of
a book, and how text moves left to right, top to bottom, and page by
page. We have studied our
names and recognize the first letter that begins our name.
Teachers have modeled making personal connections to
text. Students have learned
to compare events in a story by using the words “same” and
“different.” Students have also
learned to retell an event’s beginning, middle, and end through sequencing
pictures.
In Writer’s Workshop, students have helped to create a
list of what good writers do. During the
workshop, we have brainstormed specific ideas that we have that could help teach
someone else something new. Students have
used drawing and writing to tell about an event. Students have
learned that “When we think we are done, we have just begun!”
This means they look at their work again to add more
detail to their words or pictures. After
celebrating our hard work, students have learned how to make suggestions to
peers to make their work even better! We have also
wrote or drawn or reactions to the character’s in the story and how we have felt
similar.
We will continue exploring the following books this
upcoming week!
