Readers Workshop
· Generating questions using the words who, what, where, when, why, and how – Using these questions to clarify meaning
· Words and their opposites
· Providing reactions to stories
· Recognizing the difference between stories and poems
· Introducing cumulative and circle stories
· Making predictions using evidence from the text
· Recognizing and producing rhyming words
· Comparing and contrasting Jan Brett stories
· Identifying major events in a story
· Retell stories with key details using the words beginning, middle, and end
· Summarizing a story
· Thinking aloud about characters, setting, and major events
· Using descriptive (juicy!) words!
· Using nonfiction books to gather information to answer a question
· Readers are like Superheroes who use their superpowers (strategies)
Just like superheroes, we use the superpowers below to read :)
o Superheroes look at pictures to see if the pictures match the words
o Superheroes use the illustrations make a movie in their mind
o Superheroes point underneath each word only once, even if the word has more than one syllable
o Superheroes make sure that we point to each word on the page and that the number of words we say matches the number of words we see (point to)
o Superheroes read sight words in a snap!
o Superheroes get our lips ready to say the first sound in a tricky word. We then check the pictures to see if there is a picture that starts with the same sound. We then read through the word.
o Superheroes think, “What word matches the picture?”
o Superheroes reread when they are stuck to make meaning.
o Superheroes look for patterns to read more smoothly.
o Superheroes notice when the pattern changes
o Superheroes re-read books again and again to make it sound smoother each time
o Superheroes make sure that their voices match what is happening in the story
o Superheroes make sure our reading sounds like our talking
